چکیده

Agricultural pesticides (i.e., insecticides, herbicides, and fungicides) represent a threat to drinking water quality and aquatic life within agricultural streams. Many agricultural streams serve as source waters for urban drinking water supplies within the Midwestern United States. Transport of pesticides from upstream agricultural streams to downstream drinking water supplies can result in an increase in pesticide concentrations in raw and finished tap water that exceed the established drinking water standards to protect human health (Brian, 1995; Coupe and Blomquist, 2004). Pesticide risks to aquatic life in agricultural streams are greater than risks to human health because agricultural streams routinely exceed benchmark levels established to protect aquatic life (Gilliom, 2007). Excessive pes-

Hydrologic and atrazine simulation of the Cedar Creek Watershed using the SWAT model.

One of the major factors contributing to surface water contamination in agricultural areas is the use of pesticides. The Soil and Water Assessment Tool (SWAT) is a hydrologic model capable of simulating the fate and transport of pesticides in an agricultural watershed. The SWAT model was used in this study to estimate stream flow and atrazine (2-chloro-4-(ethylamino)-6-(isopropylamino)-s-triazi...

Public health perspectives of channelized and unchannelized headwater streams in central Ohio: a case study.

Headwater streams constitute the majority of watersheds in the United States and many in the midwest have been channelized for agricultural drainage. Public health implications of water chemistry and aquatic insects within channelized and unchannelized headwater streams have not been explored. We sampled water chemistry and aquatic insects in two channelized and two unchannelized headwater stre...

Effect of scale on the behavior of atrazine in surface waters.

Field runoff is an important transport mechanism by which agricultural pesticides, including atrazine, move into the hydrologic environment. Atrazine is chosen because it is widely used, is transported in runoff relatively easily, is widely observed in surface waters, and has relatively little loss in the stream network. Data on runoff of atrazine from experimental plot and field studies is com...

Our objective was to estimate the watershed scale impact of grass buEers by comparing sediment and agichemical losses from two adjacent 14 1 165 hectare watersheds, one with conservation buffers and one without. Rainfall derived m o f f events frorn 2002-2003 were monitored for water runoff, TSS, phosphorous and atrazine loss. A conservation-watershed included 0.8 Ism o...

Modelling scenarios of agriculture changes on freshwater uses and water quality at a large watershed scale – the case of the Charente watershed (France)

The Charente River Basin (10 000 km2) is linked to the Pertuis Charentais Sea by a large tidal influence. The agriculture impacts strongly the quantity and the quality of freshwaters and influences the salinity and the quality of coastal waters needed by the oyster culture. In the context of 2 projects dealing with ICZM (EU Spicosa project, Respireau), we focused on the environmental assessment...
